Design and Implement SQL Server Databases

Overview

By the end of this course, learners will be able to design structured SQL Server databases, implement relational schemas, apply constraints and transactions, develop stored procedures and functions, and create views for reliable reporting and analysis.

This course provides a comprehensive, hands-on case study approach to SQL Server using a hyper-market business scenario. Learners progress from database creation and design fundamentals to advanced programming concepts such as triggers, temporary tables, parameterized stored procedures, cursors, and transaction control. Each module builds logically on the previous one, ensuring a clear understanding of how real-world database systems are planned, implemented, tested, and optimized.

Learners benefit by gaining practical, job-ready SQL Server skills that align with real industry workflows, including data integrity enforcement, performance-aware design, and structured testing with sample billing data. What makes this course unique is its end-to-end case study focus, allowing learners to see how individual SQL concepts connect across an entire system rather than in isolation. Upon completion, learners will be well prepared to design, implement, and manage SQL Server databases in professional environments.

Syllabus 4

  1. Building the Database Foundation 3 hours

This module introduces SQL Server database fundamentals, focusing on database creation, logical design principles, schemas, tables, and relational integrity required to build a strong and scalable database foundation.

  2. Data Management and Optimization 2 hours

This module covers optimized database design practices, data insertion techniques, triggers, temporary tables, and reusable database functionality to support efficient and automated data management.

  3. Advanced Programming with SQL Server 2 hours

This module focuses on advanced SQL Server programming concepts, including stored procedures, parameters, conditional logic, system-defined functions, and cursor-based processing.

  4. Transactions, Queries, and Reporting 2.5 hours

This module explains transaction management, joins, testing strategies, and views to ensure data consistency, accurate reporting, and reliable SQL Server application behavior.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages

  • Structured courses with graded quizzes, assignments and deadlines you can reset.
  • A shareable certificate from the university or company when you pay.
  • Financial aid is often approved for students in India (apply 15 days before you need it).
  • Covers niche tools that universities don't teach.
  • Self-paced: start any time.
  • A clear syllabus (4 parts) you can see before you start.

Disadvantages

  • Paid after a 7-day free trial (Coursera Plus or per course).
  • Some courses can be audited for free, but graded work and certificates need payment.
  • Many courses are produced quickly from slides and screen recordings; read the reviews first.
