Edge Computing Patterns for Solution Architects

Overview

Edge computing is transforming how modern enterprises deliver data-driven services, bridging the gap between centralized cloud infrastructures and decentralized edge environments. This course provides a deep understanding of the architectural patterns and design principles needed to create resilient, scalable, and high-performance distributed systems.

Through practical exploration, learners will master strategies to design and deploy edge solutions across hybrid and multi-cloud ecosystems. They’ll gain hands-on knowledge of how to balance workloads, manage latency-sensitive applications, and apply industry-tested best practices to real-world use cases.

What makes this course unique is its pattern-based approach, built around real-world examples, automation principles, and scalability considerations. It connects theoretical frameworks with proven architectures, ensuring learners can apply what they learn directly to complex enterprise environments.

This course is designed for solution architects, enterprise architects, and IT professionals experienced in cloud computing who want to specialize in edge solution design. A foundational understanding of cloud architecture concepts is recommended to get the most from this course.

Syllabus 11

  1. Our View of Edge Computing 1.5 hours

In this section, we define edge computing terminology, categorize edge scenarios, and explore deployment tactics to enhance collaboration and architectural decision-making.

  2. Edge Architectural Components 2 hours

In this section, we examine edge components, their roles, and non-functional requirements (NFRs) to design efficient, low-latency edge-native applications for distributed systems.

  3. Core Edge Architecture 1.5 hours

In this section, we explore edge device hub patterns, container use in constrained devices, and disconnected operations to optimize IoT solutions for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

  4. Network Edge Architecture 2 hours

In this section, we examine network edge architecture, focusing on NFV, SDN, MEC, and their role in enhancing 5G and edge computing services through virtualization and cloud-native solutions.

  5. End-to-End Edge Architecture 2 hours

In this section, we examine end-to-end edge architectures, IT and OT convergence, and industry-specific scenarios.

  6. Data Has Weight and Inertia 2 hours

In this section, we examine data encryption, storage policies, and data states for secure edge computing.

  7. Automate to Achieve Scale 1.5 hours

In this section, we explore automation for edge device deployment, scalable workflows for IT and OT, and AI-driven security to enhance operational efficiency and consistency.

  8. Monitoring and Observability 1 hour

In this section, we explore edge monitoring strategies, network performance metrics, and observability frameworks to ensure reliable distributed system operations.

  9. Connect Judiciously but Thoughtlessly 1.5 hours

In this section, we explore application-directed networking, Zero Trust principles, and secure edge configurations to enhance developer agility and operational efficiency.

  10. Open Source Software Can Benefit You 2 hours

In this section, we explore strategies to manage open source risks and contribute without losing intellectual property.

  11. Recommendations and Best Practices 1.5 hours

In this section, we explore edge-native best practices, design antifragile applications, and develop strategies for graceful recovery from edge failures.
