96% of all codebases are now estimated to contain some open-source software (2023 Synopsis OSSRA report). The main movers and shakers in professional open source are who you would expect: Amazon, Apache, IBM, Google... But where are the banks?
Traditionally, banks have shied away from open source, citing stringent compliance and regulatory requirements, but the winds of change are here. Banks and other date-sensitive organisations are starting to adopt and contribute to open-source projects in major ways.
This session will cover:
- The hurdles for adopting open source in data-sensitive organisations (legacy architecture, culture, etc.)
- Practical tips for creating a culture around open-source contributions
- Steps to take to bring in open-source tools (like feature flagging tools and observability)
- Benefits of open-source contribution (preventing excessive internal forks, reducing the risks of not having maintainers to the projects)
