A data pipeline that ends in a file has not finished its job. This course takes a Rust medallion pipeline built with Polars (bronze, silver and gold over 32,780 real wine ratings) and puts the gold layer behind an HTTP API with Axum. Every endpoint is a Polars expression. No query parameter ever becomes code.
What you'll learn
Build typed DataFrames with the Polars Rust API and load CSV data with explicit types
Choose between eager and lazy evaluation, and read a LazyFrame's plan before calling collect
Clean a real dataset with documented drop, fill and flag rules, and filter out-of-range values
Sort, group, aggregate and join DataFrames, and use a left join's nulls as a data-quality signal
Assemble a bronze, silver and gold medallion pipeline as a Rust command-line tool
Serve the gold layer over HTTP with Axum, mapping query parameters onto Polars expressions safely
Syllabus 4
Polars Foundations : why Polars, DataFrames and Series, reading CSV, casting, and eager versus lazy evaluation
Cleaning and Transforming Wine Data : nulls, normalization, filtering, sorting, grouping, and join types for enrichment
Building the Medallion Pipeline : the guarantees of bronze, silver and gold, built as a single command-line tool
Serving the Gold Layer : an Axum API over the gold LazyFrame, with filter, group-by, search and region routes, and a graded serve project
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
University courses you can audit for free, with lectures, readings and practice quizzes.
A verified certificate from the university if you pay for it.
459,702 learners have taken it, so help and notes are easy to find.
Self-paced: start any time.
A clear syllabus (4 parts) you can see before you start.
Hands-on: you build or practise, not just watch.
Disadvantages
Graded assignments and the certificate need the paid track.
Audit access can expire a few weeks after the course ends.
Learning is free, but the certificate costs money.
Some parts (graded work, certificate) are paid.
Some points apply to every course of this kind; see how we rank.
Free to audit
Free: Choose "Audit this course" when you enrol: lectures, readings and practice are free.
Paid: Graded assignments and the verified certificate (Certificate $149). Audit access may end after the course closes.
Before you start
Comfort reading and writing basic Rust: functions, structs, Result and ?. No prior Polars, pandas or web-framework experience is assumed.
To run the examples you need a terminal and a Rust toolchain. The dataset is a public CSV that the labs download in one command.
