Seismological Data Analysis

Overview

As a seismologist, I utilize earthquake-generated waves to investigate the Earth's internal structure. A common method involves deploying a network of instruments to record seismic events over several years. The data collected through these instruments is then analyzed to construct a comprehensive model of the Earth's interior.

In this course, we will explore a variety of data processing techniques, with a strong emphasis on the Linux environment. Students will gain hands-on experience with essential seismological tools such as ObsPy, Seismic Analysis Code (SAC), AWK, Generic Mapping Tools (GMT), TauP, and Bash shell scripting. These tools are instrumental in efficiently handling, processing, and interpreting seismic data.

The course combines both theoretical foundations and practical applications of earthquake data analysis. Topics covered include spectral analysis, wave dispersion, receiver functions, tomography, and velocity analysis. By the end of the course, students will be proficient in:

• Navigating and utilizing the Linux operating system.

• Writing AWK and Bash scripts to manage and process large-scale seismic datasets. • Accessing and retrieving seismic data from global data centers using request tools.

• Working with a range of seismological data formats, including SEED, SEGY, and RESP files.

• Using Python and ObsPy to process and analyze seismic data.

• Employing SAC for identifying seismic phases, picking arrivals, filtering signals, and applying advanced signal processing techniques.

• Performing instrument response removal, seismogram rotation, cross-correlation, and stacking for improved data interpretation.

This course is highly relevant for students and professionals in civil engineering, geophysics, geology, mathematics, and physics. The importance of seismic data analysis spans multiple domains:

• It is vital for earthquake engineering, hazard mitigation, and infrastructure development by informing the design of earthquake-resistant structures and assessing seismic risks.

• Seismology enhances our understanding of the Earth's subsurface, tectonic activity, and resource exploration, helping to delineate fault systems, plate boundaries, and lithospheric processes.

• Advanced processing methods are crucial for subsurface exploration, including oil and gas prospecting, and improving earthquake forecasting models.

By the conclusion of this course, students will be equipped with both the technical skills and theoretical knowledge necessary for careers in geophysics, the oil and gas industry, earthquake engineering, petroleum exploration, and academic research.
