Overview
Animate clay, paper or toys frame by frame into a 30-second story.
Why build this?
It teaches the principle behind all film: still pictures shown quickly look like movement.
What you will learn
- How frames create motion
- How timing changes the feel
- How to plan a story in shots
Skills you will use
Materials and tools
- A phone on a fixed stand
- Clay or cut paper
- A steady light
- A free stop-motion app

Step-by-step roadmap
Start
You will finish with: a 30-second animation.
- 1
Prerequisites
Nothing special to know first. Then collect the 4 items in the materials list.
- 2
Learn
- How frames create motion
- How timing changes the feel
- How to plan a story in shots
- 3
Plan
Write the brief in three lines: subject, audience and the feeling you want. Collect references and make a shot list, storyboard or sketch set.
- 4
Build
- Write a 30-second story.
- Build the set and characters.
- Fix the camera and light.
- Shoot at 12 frames per second, moving a little each frame.
- Add sound and titles.
- 5
Test
Show a draft to three people from your audience and note where they lose interest or get confused.
- 6
Document
Keep the sketches, drafts and rejected versions; they show your process. Report structure
- 7
Present
Show the finished work first, then the process and the choices you made. Presentation structure · Viva questions
- 8
Publish
Put it online as a portfolio piece with a short write-up of the brief and process.
Expected outcome
A 30-second animation.
